an account of the mage war :
﹉﹉ on the origins of the book
The Mage War: Known also as the Silent War, this was a century-long conflict that was fought between Eastern and Western Magic users. The origins of the war have become lost over the course of time, and to this day, there exist only several credible accounts (written or otherwise) of the true nature of the war. The one undisputed fact of the war is that it ended in the Western faction's defeat.

The book is written from a third-person perspective, and poses as a fiction novel when it is--in reality--one of the most accurate historical accounts of the Mage War's end to date. The reason that it is written in such a manner is to prevent the existence of the war, and of magic itself, from being known to the general public. The author himself never finished the book, due to his untimely death. It was only following the end of the war that a close friend was able to complete the account by adding in a final chapter and releasing it under its original writer's name. Only several hand bound copies are known to exist, with three in the possession of eminent Mage War historians.

﹉﹉ a summary of its contents
An Account of The Mage War details the experiences of a nameless magic user (essentially, Reiner Schultz) towards the end of the century-long war. Little information is actually given about the main protagonist or his story. In fact, most of the book is dedicated to chronicling major battles, and the only thing that keeps it from falling entirely into the realm of academic writing are the few intermittent pages of novel-styled narrative. Whether these more informal sections give insight into the writer's private life or simply exist to pose as filler content is a point of debate even to this day.

The book’s contents—aside from describing the events of the Mage War in great detail—serves to shed some light on the life of nameless mage who was speculated to be the writer himself. His position, which is rooted more deeply in the politics of the war than the actual fighting, is hinted at throughout the course of the text. The friction between what remained of his relatives—particularly when his half-brother was concerned—is one of the central conflicts of the book, and a difference in ideology eventually resulted in the final clash between the protagonist and his family. Whether or not it was ever resolved remains unknown, as the author died shortly after.

The final chapter is written entirely as a recap of the final days of the Mage War, with no formal references to either the book’s protagonist or his story. It ends the book on a decidedly pessimistic tone, concluding that Western faction's defeat marked the end of an era. The writer of the final chapter makes a clear distinction between the original writer and himself, claiming in the preface of the published copy that he simply wants to give the book and end, with no desire to take credit for any of its contents.

the book spirit :
﹉﹉ notable personality traits
The man known as Reiner Schultz appears to be mild-mannered and easygoing, always ready with a kind smile and reassuring words for someone in need. However, his friendly exterior belies a fierce sense of duty. In life, it was to his faction and what few people he held dear. But now as a book spirit, he feels obligated to do everything he can to protect the library and its occupants. He has a tendency to see things strictly in black and white, and very few gray areas exist, as far as he is concerned. To him, right and wrongs are absolutes. This makes him rather stubborn and less likely to take other peoples’ opinions into account, but it also renders him less prone to moments of self-doubt and questioning, which he views as a weakness. He’s not particularly comfortable with people getting too physically close to him, especially if he thinks that they have any sort of ulterior motives. Not one to instigate fights, but can be very passive aggressive if someone gets on his bad side.

Reiner is intelligent, keen and—above all—more calculating than most people give him credit for. He is rather ruthless in battle, and is not above pulling dirty moves to win, especially if the wellbeing of those he cares about hinges on his enemy’s defeat. As that was usually the case during his battles in the Mage War, Reiner takes fighting quite seriously. He grew up unsheltered from the kill-or-be-killed mentality that was prevalent in both factions of the war, so he rarely has much sympathy for his enemies. Oftentimes he will go out of his way to avoid seeing them as fellow human beings because it makes taking them down easier. Despite the status he grew to attain within his faction, Reiner is well aware of the fact that he too is probably just a pawn in the grand scheme of things, so doesn’t put much effort into keeping up an authoritative front. He’s not above suggesting blackmail to get his way, but it’s rare that he’ll ever want anything enough to do this—it’s really just a byproduct of his political upbringing. All the same, he is generally of the mindset that the end justifies the means.

﹉﹉ miscellaneous information
Despite his abilities as a strategist, it's never wise trust him with anything on a small scale as he is prone to forgetting the tiny, but usually important, details. One memorable example—the pistol he carries has no bullets.

His forgetfulness sometimes even extends to names and faces, although he doesn’t really make a big show of not remembering people when they approach him and start a conversation.

He is prone to some making up some really outlandish tales, and yet he has the talent for making them sound completely believable at the same time. As such, it's really no surprise that people have such a hard time figuring out whether or not the narrative portions of his book can be viewed as autobiographical or not.

Reiner can breathe underwater for long periods of time—or at least, he pretends he can. The reality is that he usually forms an air bubble around himself by parting the water, so he stays nice and dry while he’s busy drowning his enemies. Take that, Houdini.

He acknowledges that his book may be a bit—but just a little—on the boring side to read. In his defense, it was never actually meant to be published in any shape or form. How Reiner’s friend ever found his diary journal at all is still a bit of a mystery to the water mage.

The water dragon that he regularly creates and controls was designed as a child, and is the closest thing that the then-young Reiner had to an imaginary friend. As such, it has a rather special place in his heart, even though the form itself is not sentient and can be created at any time with enough water present.

it's not a diary it's called a manbook

That was a really fun 2000 word read. *v* Your writing style is really engaging and flows very well, so it didn't even feel like 2000 words. xD

I'm not even sure how I even got this reaction, but Reiner sounds really... adorable. Maybe it's because he seems really earnest to me, LOL. Whichever way, I can't wait to see everyone in the Library together. *A*

Just... the mental image of Reiner literally waving around his little pistol in the air attempting to look threatening. I don't know why I found that so funny when I first read it |D

And also, did his clothes get darker or is that just me. O:
